After land clearing process we proceed our activity with land management. Land management is the process of managing the use and development of land resources.

Determining the pH of soil

Actually we need to know the exact pH soil of our crop before we apply the lime.So, we need to determine the pH soil in the laboratory. It's important to determine the pH soil because it will influnce the availability of essential nutrients. Each group need to take a two soil sample in different place which is the soil sample is topsoil. Topsoil is the upper and the outermost layer of soil using auger.
After that, my teammates dry the soil sample under the sunlight about a week.

After we took soil sample we will move to lab. In lab we need to determined the pH of the soil to know the soil are acid, basic or neutral. Every plot needed different pH value because of based on the crops. The pH for sweet corn are between 5.8-6.8. If the soil pH below 5.8 we need to apply lime. Here i want to share the process of determined soil pH.

Preparation of the suspension
  1.       10 g of the air dried soil (fraction < 2mm) was taken a a representative sample
  2.       The sample bottle was placed in the sample bottle
  3.       The suspension was shake or mix vigorously using the mechanical shaker or mixer for 30 min and was waited for 5 min.
  4.       The suspension wat and for 30 min.
  5.       The electrode was immersed into clear supernatant and the pH was record one the reading was constant. 
  6.       Using the buffer solution, the pH meter was calibrate a prescribed in the manufacturer’s manual.
  7.       The electrode was leave in distilled water when finished with the pH meter.

  1.             The pH meter was adjust a indicated in the manufacturer’ manual.
  2.              The temperature of the suspension was measured and the temperature of that buffer solution was take are and the soil suspension was not differ by more than 1˚c.
  3.             Before the measurement of the pH, the suspension was shake.
  4.             pH in the settling suspension was measure.
  5.             After stabilization was reached, the pH was read.

Let's continue with liming process

After we have done determined the soil pH we do liming. Liming is the process of application to soil of calcium and magnesium and rich of other materials in various form. By liming process also we can increase the soil pH.
For your information our soil already in a good range pH but for our learning purpose we still apply the lime

GERMINATE Zea mays SEED

After we have done with land preparing and applying mulcing its time for us to germinate seed. Every group need to choose one crops. After discuss my group decided to plant a sweet corn. Before we choose the plants we need to know how long the plants take to harvest because we have a short time to plant the crops and need to sell before our final exam. For sweet corn it can be harvest on 68 until 72 days. So, it suitable with our time before final exam. MAINTENANCE

Yeah! we continued again with the maintenance. After we have done with the planting the seed in the tray and removed it on the planting bed we need to took care the plants from any insect or anything that could damaged the baby Zea mays. Once a plantation has been established, the work should not be considered finished. It will be necessary, for example, to protect the plantation against weather, fire, insects and fungi, and animals. A variety of cultural treatments also may be required to meet the purpose of the plantation. So, the first action that we need to do is to remove the weed. The weed always around the the plants grow. That weeds will absorb the nutrient from the plant to grow. That causes the plants will stunted. For your information, sweet corn's leave already eat by some insect. It make the hole of the leaves.
